Critical Evaluation

My project for BA 8 was to create a 12 page chapter for my graphic novel called Black Realm. Within this chapter the main character called Daichi Kokon is in old almost abandoned office on his way to fight the Rat King. But on the way there he meets a prisoner held here, an experiment creature runaway named TX0090 nicknamed Tuqnuk. The chapter starts midway through the novel, chapter 12 I’ve called it, as such I needed to provide some back story, so I put all of this on the first page. I still think it’s readable but the reader may get bored reading through it because it may be too long. Furthermore this may be considered slowing down the story flow, however because it’s at the start I feel that it doesn’t get in the way.

In this graphic novel is my first boss fight scene and overall I think the storyline for it went well, mostly because it was straight into the fight not too much standing around although a couple for the pages the Rat King is still because he’s thinking. I actually like this because it provides the reader a review of the fight from the Rat Kings point of view giving the reader an idea of how this character is thinking and what his personality is like. The same I’ve done for the main character.

The other character Tuqnuk provides a somewhat important role in the fight due to him being a distraction for the bad guy, the artwork influence for this character I wanted it to be something odd and alien like, so a lot his designs comes from Crazy Bones and Pokemon. In the he turned out to be sorter spanner shaped and coloured, I also made him about 3 feet tall so he doesn’t take the lime light of the main character Daichi.

The Rat Kings influence was partly based on Splinter from Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtle although I have taken influence from many different artists I also took the skeleton structure from a meerkat. The structure of the rat king looks fine aggressive, strong as well as somewhat menacing. I have however had some difficulties getting angles right when draw him; I got round this by using splinter as a bases for my drawings.

Daichi Kokon influence is taken from two characters both of them taken from manga, the first is from Bleach the character is Ichimaru Gin. From him I’ve taken the robe idea as well as some of the body structure. The second character is Seto Kaiba from Yugioh from him I’ve taken the hair and his coat. My character overall design is to be an calm and collected individual that doesn’t panic in any situation. Again although I’ve had some difficulties the viewing angles but I’ve struggled through it.
My graphic novel influences come from combined ideas between manga and marvel comics, the artwork is mostly manga and the marvel part is colour and partly layout. I think though I might have made it a bit dull and may have too many dark images. The light source however is quite high up and is murky so generally the feel of it should be correct.

My showreel is designed in such a way that the viewer is seeing it as a real graphic novel so the pages really turn, the music I’ve chosen however maybe a little over theatrical and slightly out of sinc, It’s a classical piece from Bach and called Toccata D minor produce in 1709. In conclusion I’ve think a work well for BA8 although I’ve had struggled every now and then.
